Fernando was born as the second of three children in Medellín, in the mountains of Colombia. His parents were David Botero and Flora Angulo. His father was a salesman who traveled by horseback, died when Fernando was just four years and his mother worked as a seamstress. An uncle took a major role in the kid's life. Although he lived isolated from art as he found it in museums and other cultural institutions, Botero was influenced by the Baroque churches and - visions of the rich life in the city.
In 1944, after Botero attended a Jesuit school, an uncle sent him to a school for matadors for two years. In 1948, at age 16, Botero published his first illustrations in the Sunday annex of El Colombiano, the daily newspaper.
