Fernando was born as the second of three children in Medellín, in the mountains of Colombia. His parents were David Botero and Flora Angulo. Although he lived isolated from art as he found it in museums and other cultural institutions, Botero was influenced by the Baroque churches and - visions of the rich life in the city.
In 1944, after Botero attended a Jesuit school, an uncle sent him to a school for matadors for two years. In 1948, at age 16, Botero published his first illustrations in the Sunday annex of El Colombiano, the daily newspaper.
